I’ve been noticing lately how much of our lives is spent wanting to do something, wishing we could do something … but struggling to move into action.

What’s the struggle to make this transition all about?

And how can we more consciously make the transition into action?

Let’s look at a couple of typical examples so we can see what we’re dealing with.

  • There’s a task I know I want to do (or maybe I feel I should do), but I keep putting it off. Something about it brings me uncertainty, and that makes it uncomfortable, so I put it off over and over. When I finally do it, it’s way easier than I feared it would be, and I wonder what took me so long.
  • There’s a project I’ve been wanting to do for some time, but I keep telling myself it’s not the right time. I’m not ready, or things are too busy. Even when I find more space, I find other reasons not to do it, because I’m not sure how to do it, and taking it on will be stepping outside of my comfort zone.
  • I want to hire a coach or start a program that I know will give me the support I’ve been looking for, but I hesitate. I am not sure if I’ll do good enough, if I’ll be right for the program, if I’ll do what’s needed to get the value out of it. So I stay in indecision and put off making the commitment.

You might be able to tell what’s stopping us: uncertainty, the unknown, and fear.

Fear and uncertainty about the unknown keep us from crossing the threshold into action.

The ironic thing is that often the most powerful thing we can do in uncertainty is to step into action – it’s in the realm of doing that we learn anything, that we’ll get the answers we’re looking for.

So how do we cross from uncertainty and indecision and avoidance … into action?

  1. Intention. Set an intention to be in action, rather than getting stuck.
  2. Turn towards. Notice the uncertainty and fear in your body, as sensation. Can you mindfully be with it, when it shows up, and bring it love?
  3. Ask what you really want. Is this something you care deeply about? Is there a possibility this represents that is meaningful to you? Do you want this?
  4. Make the smallest movement. Often the smallest step can get the ball rolling, and we always forget that.
  5. Find the joy. How can this action feel joyous, wondrous, sacred, alive for you?

The more we practice this, the better we get at it. And being in action not only feels good, it starts to clear up a lot of the stuckness of our lives.

If you want to change your eating habits, there’s a part of you who just wants to eat the donuts. If you want to exercise more, there’s a part of you who just wants to be lazy and relax. If you want to have less drama in your life, there’s a part of you that gets off on the drama. If you want to write a book and change people’s lives, there’s a part of you who wants to stay in the safety of anonymity or the life you already know.

This part of you will fight against the part of you that wants to create the change.

Here’s the counterintuitive advice: Own that part of you that doesn’t want to change.

Until you own this part of you, you’re constantly trying to ignore it, repress it, squash it. Committing violence against a part of you doesn’t make it go away — in fact, it will strengthen it. Trying to ignore it means it will keep mysteriously controlling you.

When this part shows up, honor it. What does it feel like to be distracted or reactive? What does it feel like to feel helpless or frustrated? What does it feel like to be fearful and avoidant? Can you notice the feelings in your body? Can you give it attention and presence?

Could you even love this part of you? Could you find the amazingness in the part of you that creates all of this, that actually enjoys the distraction and helplessness and laziness and indulgence and drama? Could you delight in the drama you create, in the theater you create, the art of your inner slob or inner tantrum thrower? Find the deliciousness and wonder in what it creates.

Once you start to love and delight and find delicious pleasure in this part of you, it no longer needs to be in control. It is loved and honored, which is all it ever wanted. You can move beyond it to another way — though it will still be there, when it does show up, you no longer have to fight it. You love it.

Counterintuitively, this relaxes everything. There’s no need to change this part of you, because it is beautiful and sacred. And without needing to change it, you can embrace the expansive change that is more than this one part of you.

5 Ways to Simplify Your Life

One of the great joys of my life is living simply, and every now and then finding ways to return to simplicity.

Life tends to get complicated with time, and so I find ways to simplify.

I’ve done lists with 100 ways to simplify, but obviously that’s not very simple! So today I’ll share five ways. These aren’t the “best” ways or the “right” ways but some of my faves.

Here they are in short form, I go into more detail below:

  1. Curate your day.
  2. Start living in fullscreen mode.
  3. Weekly clearing ritual.
  4. Eat simple foods & move.
  5. Slow down & enjoy quietude.

Curiosity piqued? Let’s look at each one.

Curate Your Day

This process starts with identifying the things you want in your day, as if you were curating a small but thoughtful collection.

What handful of things would make your day amazing? For me: meditation, reading, writing, calls with team & clients, time with loved ones, simple foods and movement (more on the foods & movement below).

What would your list contain? Yoga, calls with family, drinks with friends, tea, a bath? Whittle it down so your day isn’t overly full.

Then start to let go of everything not on the list. Let go of social media and news sites and other distractions, if they don’t fit into your curated day. Let go of doing too much, leaving space so that the curated lovely activities feel spacious and not rushed.

Actions/tools: A simple document or notebook page where you make a curated list of what you want in your life will suffice. Take 20 minutes and really give this your attention.

Live in Fullscreen Mode

My favorite way of going through my day is to do every activity in fullscreen mode. When I can remember. That means if I’m answering emails, I give myself full space to read and reply to each email instead of having a thousand tabs open. If I’m writing, I’m just writing. If I’m eating, I’m just eating.

Of course, I don’t always do this, but when I do, my life feels so much more simple. Each activity is generously given its own space, and I enjoy each more.

Fully be present for every activity, from brushing your teeth to washing a dish to reading a book.

Actions/tools: I like the Onetab extension for the Chrome browser, to clear away all the extraneous tabs and give full attention to one thing. Fullscreen writing apps. Close all apps on your phone but the one you’re reading. Turn off devices when you’re doing something analog.

Weekly Clearing Ritual

Each week, you might consider a ritual where you clear everything out. Sunday is a good day for it, but so is Friday.

Spend a short time clearing out your various inboxes, getting them to zero. Clear out your desk and computer desktop/download folder. Get your todo list and calendar in good shape. Clear out clutter and papers.

This clearing ritual feels fantastic! You are ready to take on the world.

Actions/tools: Set aside an hour on your calendar each week for a clearing ritual. Go through everything you can and get your digital and physical life cleared. Bonus: have a ritual for finances as well.

Eat Simple Foods & Move

Health can be such a fraught area of our life, for so many reasons. So I find it calming when I can simplify.

I start with movement. Go out for a walk or run. Drop into a squat position, move around like an animal. Stretch, hang, pull myself up, push myself up. Lift some weights, play some sports, play with the kids outside. I enjoy simple movement that doesn’t require a ton of equipment.

Then I fuel my body with simple food:

  • Lentils and kale (with lemon juice, soy sauce, olive oil, nutritional yeast and cayenne pepper)
  • Bean tacos with guac and salsa and veggies
  • Beans and brown rice, tahini sauce and all kinds of veggies
  • Oats and berries with nuts and cinnamon
  • Coconut meat, avocados, berries, dark chocolate, tea

The food is simple, whole, and delicious. It fuels the temple of my body, doesn’t cost a crazy amount, doesn’t impact the earth much, and doesn’t harm animals.

Actions/tools: Make a list of simple foods you enjoy, and base your eating on these. Don’t be crazy strict about it, it’s about eating simply not being rigid. Move every day, throughout the day.

Slow Down & Enjoy Quietude

You don’t need any material things in order to slow down. You just do less, and savor each activity. Take some breaths, and give yourself more space. Leave space between things, and enjoy that in between space.

Notice when there are moments of quiet, and savor that as well. Create moments of quiet if needed.

This is the benefit of living a simple life, this slowness and spaciousness, but it can also be a path to the simple life. Slow down to simplify.

Actions/tools: This week, put a physical note for yourself to slow down, and see what that practice might be like for you.

Becoming Trustable

As a husband, a father, a man … one of the things I crave most is for my loved ones to trust me. It’s something I want with my team, my readers, my coaching clients, the members of my Sea Change and Fearless Training programs.

And I’ve worked hard over the years to become more trustable.

It’s really a magical thing, when people start trusting you. When your wife and kids trust you, it can melt your heart. They can relax, and feel taken care of. When your clients trust you, you can go deeper with them. When you trust yourself, you can relax more in any activity.

There’s magic in becoming trustable.

In this article, I’d like to share some of what I’ve learned. To be clear: I am not perfect, and I don’t always do everything perfectly. This isn’t about perfection, but about being someone that people can count on — including taking responsibility when you’ve fallen short of what they were expecting.

An Example: What Happens in a Marriage When You’re Trustable

A marriage is a great example of where the magic of trustability can transform things. In a marriage, one partner will crave the radiant love (not necessarily sexual love) of the other partner — a husband craving the abundant feminine love of his wife, for example. (Note: This can apply to any gendered relationship — I’m going to use man/woman because that’s the one I know best.)

But she can’t fully give her radiant love and affection if she can’t relax. And she can’t relax if she’s always worried about whether things are going to be taken care of, anxious about whether her life is safe, whether you’re going to follow through on what you said you’d do. I can’t tell you how many men I’ve worked with who said this is one of their wives’ main complaint!

When our partner doesn’t trust us and complains that we don’t do what we say we’re going to do … we can take that as criticism. We can say, “Why does she always have to complain about me??” But what we’re missing is truly getting her experience, of having to worry about things she doesn’t want to worry about. She feels tense, and she can’t relax enough to give her radiant love.

When they can relax, and know that things are taken care of … they can give their love more easily and abundantly. Which is what we crave.

And so the magic comes when we become trustable — all of a sudden, they can relax more. And their love flows more easily and abundantly. It’s a wonderful magic!

It turns out, this is how all relationships often work, including professional relationships — when they can trust us and relax, a deeper relationship can form. Magic happens.

How to Become More Trustable

When we understand how all of the above works … then the question becomes, “How do I become more trustable?”

And my answer is that it doesn’t happen overnight. And it’s a never-ending process, like any kind of mastery. You’re never done growing in this area.

But it is possible to grow tremendously here!

I’m going to give some of the key learnings here:

  • Do your best to practice keeping your word. That means when you say you’re going to do something, really commit to making that happen. Sometimes that means sacrificing some comfort to make it happen. But make it a top priority, and take it seriously.
  • When you can’t keep your word, own up to it. Let them know ahead of time if you’re not able to do it. If you messed up, take responsibility and apologize, and let them know what you’ll do going forward to avoid the same mistake repeating. Do what you need to do to fix things.
  • Breathe deeply and slow down. When we’re jumpy and anxious, they will feel it. When we stand solidly, breathe deeply, and go slower … they feel this as solidity and trustability. As with all of this, it’s a learning process — you’ll have moments of anxiety, but you can learn to breathe deeply even here. You’ll have moments of fidgetyness and jumpiness … but you can learn to slow down even here, with practice.
  • Create structure for yourself and them. When you are committed to making certain things happen (taking care of the car, getting the groceries, paying the bills) … it will help greatly to have structure, like a schedule with reminders. When will this get taken care of? You might alter the structure, but having a structure for you and those around you helps them to know that things are in order and will be taken care of. Practice creating structure for others when it would serve them (without forcing it on them) — offer a plan, a schedule, a clear decision, an agreement.
  • When they complain about something you haven’t done … listen. Hold space for their complaint, and instead of taking it personally, see if there’s some way you can help them. But listen first, and get them. Then see what you can do to make it right, to create structure so they can trust it will get done, to clean up any mess you’ve accidentally made. You don’t need to feel blame or shame, but just get them.
  • Take things seriously. But not too seriously! OK, it’s good to have a sense of humor … but if you dismiss their concerns, or say, “Yeah yeah don’t worry” … they will worry. They can’t trust that you’re going to do your best. Give it your all. Hear their concerns. Make it clear that you’re going to take care of it.
  • Take full responsibility. Especially when you want to blame them. Instead of pointing the finger … look at what you might have done to contribute to this, or to allow this situation to happen. Have you not been clear? Have you not created an agreement around this? Have you not been acknowledging them for how great they are? Have you not been taking care of things? When you think you shouldn’t have to take on responsibility — that’s when you can take on more.
  • Take care of yourself. If you can’t take care of yourself, how can you be trusted to take care of them? This means clean up your messes, put things in order, do some basic personal hygiene, take care of your emotions, give yourself rest when you’re feeling stressed or burned out. Being trustable doesn’t mean you have to take on so much that you’re overworked.
  • Always look for ways to be more trustable. Where have you dropped the ball? Is there something you could do to feel more solid to them? Where have you avoided taking on responsibility? Where have you let things lapse into a mess? This is a continual area of growth. You don’t have to be perfect, but you can continue to grow. For life.

If you take some of this on, a little at a time, I would be willing to bet that things will magically start to change for you in all of your relationships. And it just feels freaking good to be trusted!

Finding Inner Peace: A Beginner’s Guide to Meditation

Meditation refers to a state where your body and mind are consciously relaxed and focused. Some of the benefits of meditation that practitioners have noticed are increased awareness, focus, concentration and a more positive outlook in life.

Meditation is regularly practiced by monks, mystics and other spiritual individuals. But don’t think that you have to be a monk or mystic to enjoy its benefits. And you don’t even have to be in a special place to practice it either. You can practice meditation in the comfort of your own home!

Clear And Calm Your Mind

Although there are many different approaches to meditation, the fundamental principles remain the same. It’s very important to remove obstructive, negative and wandering thoughts in order to clear and calm your mind with a deep sense of focus. This prepares your mind for a better quality spiritual journey.

The negative thoughts you have those of noisy neighbors, bossy office mates, that parking ticket you got, and unwanted spam are said to contribute to the polluting of the mind. Shutting them out allows for the cleansing of the mind so that it may focus on deeper, more meaningful thoughts.

Some practitioners even shut out all sensory input no sights, no sounds and nothing to touch. They try to detach themselves from the outer world and focus on a more meaningful, deep, profound thought if that is the goal. It may seem deafening at first, since we are all too accustomed to constantly hearing and seeing things, but as you continue this exercise you will find yourself becoming more aware of your inner self.

Get Comfortable

If you find that some meditating positions you see on the internet or television very uncomfortable, please do not worry about it. What’s important for you here is to be in a comfortable position conducive to concentration. You may sit cross-legged on the floor, lay down or sit in a chair. Whatever is most comfortable for you.

If the position allows you to relax and focus, then that would be a good starting point. While sitting or standing, the back should be straight, but not tense or tight. In other positions, the only no-no is slouching and falling asleep.

Wearing loose, comfortable clothes is best for meditation because tight fitting clothes has a tendency to make you feel tense.

The place you perform meditation should be a quiet environment, such as your living room, bedroom or any place that you feel comfortable in. You may even meditate outdoors if you wish. Again, choose a quiet environment. You might want an exercise mat if you plan to take on the more challenging positions. Again, whatever you’re most comfortable with.

Silence Please

Silence helps most people relax and meditate, so you may want a quiet, isolated area far from the ringing of the phone or the humming of the washing machine. Pleasing scents also help in that regard, so aromatic candles is a good idea.

The monks you see on television or the internet making those monotonous sounds are actually performing their mantra. This, in simple terms, is a short creed, a simple sound that holds a mystic value.

You certainly do not need to do a mantra; however, you may want to focus on slow, deep breaths.

Focus, Focus, Focus

The principle here is to focus. You could also try focusing on a certain object or thought.

One routine during meditation is to scan your body from head to toe, which helps your body relax. While doing this, be aware of any tension on any part of your body. Mentally visualize releasing this tension. It works wonders.

There are also many audio meditations on the market that have been scientifically proven to alter your brainwaves in such a way to help you achieve deep meditation. They work wonders as well.

Meditation is a relatively risk-free practice and its benefits are well worth the effort (or no effort due to relaxation).

Studies have shown that meditation does bring about beneficial physiologic effects to the body and not to mention a growing consensus in the medical community that study the positive effects of meditation. So what are you waiting for? Start your meditation journey today!

A Well Lived Life of Purpose

Most of the people I know and work with want a life of meaning and purpose, not a life where we just get by …

A well lived life, that feels meaningful.

But this isn’t taught in schools, and most of us feel completely unsure of how to move towards this.

I’m not going to fully answer how to live a life of purpose in this article … but I’d love to talk about how to move in that direction.

Commitment

The first thing you might consider is committing yourself to finding a life of purpose. How important is that to you? Are you willing to move into uncertainty for this, or is comfort and safety more important to you at the moment?

To commit, you have to commit in the gut. To tell yourself that this is important enough to devote yourself to, to dedicate time, to practice with the uncdertainty. Commit to yourself, on paper. Then to others.

Exploration

The second thing to consider is embarking on an adventure of exploring your purpose, if you don’t already have a good sense of it. It’s not as simple as asking, “What would I like to do?” or doing a web search for the answer. You have to explore it, and bringing a sense of adventure might be just the right approach.

1. Here’s how I usually recommend exploring purpose:Make a list of things that you think might be meaningful to you — helping children in need, helping people reduce stress, traveling to help communities in need, etc. Put anything on the list that’s even remotely possible or interesting, don’t limit yourself here. Hint: I’ve found that the most meaningful things are when you’re helping other people with something you care about.

2. Ask yourself which 3-5 of these would be most meaningful. If one really stands out — maybe it’s the thing you’ve been wanting to do for years — then that’s where to start. But maybe you’re not sure, so pick 3-5. This is your short list.

3. Of those, let your gut choose the top one. If you absolutely don’t know, either choose randomly, or ask a friend. This isn’t your final answer, but just the one you’re going to start with.

4. Choose a 2-week version of this top possibility. For example, if you want to help people with stress, could you help 1 person over video calls and email for 2 weeks? This is the mini-version of your possible purpose. Explore this for 2 weeks, really pouring yourself into it.

5. If this really resonates, make a one-month version of it and continue to explore. If it doesn’t, pick the next thing on your short list. Do a 2-week version of that. Repeat until you find something to explore for a month or longer.

This is the iterative method of purpose exploration. You try a mini-version of something for a couple weeks. Maybe longer. And keep doing this until you hit on something.

Notice if you feel like avoiding this process, or a part of the process. This is your uncertainty showing up as fear. That’s completely OK, but you might ask whether you’d like to get support with that uncertainty, so you don’t have to be stopped.

A Well Lived Life

There are an infinite number of possibilities for living a well lived life. You might meditate on a mountain for years, or enjoy the simple things. You might enjoy time with loved ones, or explore culinary pleasures. You might read all day, or listen to music. You might get your work done, and come home satisfied from a job well done.

For me, one of the biggest components of a well lived life — other than loved ones and a profound appreciation of life — is doing something that feels meaningful. And that has usually been helping others with something that’s meaningful to them.

If you can serve others, make their lives better in some small way (or a big way) … it feels incredibly meaningful. Much more than simply traveling or building up wealth or enjoying good food or having fun. Those are all great, but they don’t feel as meaningful to me.

If you can hit on something like that, that feels meaningful … then a well lived life becomes simple:

Spend quality time with loved ones.

Take care of yourself.

Find profound appreciation for the joy of life.

And serve others in a meaningful way.

It’s simple, but not always easy. And that makes it even richer.

What Is The Subconscious Mind?

The subconscious mind is the part of the brain that greatly influences a person’s actions and feelings. Consider learning how to ride a bike as a child and then trying it again as an adult. The fact that you can jump on the bike and knowing how to ride it comes back immediately and automatically is all thanks to the subconscious mind. You never have to think about how to ride a bike. It’s responsible for streams of thought, sources of visualizations such as dreams and daydreams, and it helps regulate bodily functions, among other things.

The subconscious minds also impacts your behavior by manifesting habits, fears, desires and attachments. It’s like a hard drive of a computer that process and stores your instincts, memories, urges, habits and desires that’s beyond your reach in awakening awareness. The term “Subconscious” is also used interchangeably with another term “Unconscious.” But for this article, “Subconscious” is used.

How To Benefit From The Subconscious Mind

The first step in changing your life is to make an impression on your subconscious mind. This can be done by making affirmations as well as thinking certain thoughts. For example, let’s say you want to attract money in your life. You can simply repeat these words “I am wealthy and successful.” Repeat these words several times a day.

Although, it’s best to say them in the morning when you get up and right before you sleep. This is when your mind is in a relaxed state, and it can easily accept the affirmations. When saying them, make sure you really mean them and focus on the words. Don’t feel it’s a chore or else it will not do you any good. You can also say them during meditation.

YouTube has thousands of videos that can help you with this process, and you don’t have to watch the video either as long as the video has audio positive affirmation statements. You can even close your eyes and meditate while the video is playing positive affirmations!

Positive Affirmations

This can work for anything. Make sure the affirmations are positive and not stating the negative. For example, if you want to quit smoking, don’t say “I don’t smoke.” Instead say, “My lungs are pure and healthy and I am cigarette free.”

“I am” are two of the most powerful words in the English language.

Also, it’s very important to think positively. Don’t say to yourself, “I’m just never lucky” or “I’m just meant to be poor.” Think the opposite: “I am lucky” or “Things always work out to my favor” or “I am wealthy and successful.” As you continue this process, you’ll eventually believe it and you’re half way there!

Ask Your Subconscious Mind For Help

If you need help with a problem or are in a situation where you have to make a tough decision and don’t know which is the best for you, then ask your subconscious mind for help. Let’s say you are contemplating two separate job offers and you are having trouble deciding between the two. Ask your subconscious mind for help by asking it. You may say something like “Infinite wisdom of my subconscious mind, I ask for your help in deciding what is best between these two job offers, I ask for your help and guidance in making a decision that is best for me.”

Be still and listen to your subconscious mind. Close your eyes if necessary and do not force anything to come to you but just be still and listen. If the answer doesn’t come right away, that’s ok. It’s probably searching for the answer and it may take a little bit of time. But, I assure you, the answer will come. You just need to be alert and patient. The answer may come from something outside of you, perhaps after you wake up. You may be clear in your thoughts on what to do. You may read or hear something that may enlighten you on what to do. You may receive your answer by running into a friend and he may say something that may help you decide. Just be patient and do not get frustrated and think too much about it. By doing so, you are delaying the answer.

Interstitial Ritual: Finding Focus & Mindfulness

We will often start our days with the best of intentions … and then promptly get caught up in a chain of busywork, messages, opening browser tabs, checking on things, answering email …

… and soon the day has gone by and we wonder what we did with the day.

There’s a simple practice that can shift that in a huge way: the Interstitial Ritual.

It’s very simple:

  • When you finish with a task (or email, message, reading something) … pause. Don’t go to the next tab or message right away.
  • Take a breath. Notice where you are, how you feel, what is around you.
  • Write down what you just finished, if it was a task. For me, I have a Today list and a Done list and I simply add the last task to my Done list, remove it from the Today list.
  • Celebrate! Reinforce your accomplishment by being grateful.
  • Now take another breath. What do you want to do next? It can be another task on your Today list, it can be answering the next email in your inbox, or it might be to take a break, drink some water, go for a walk, stretch.
  • Set that intention, and get to it.

It’s that simple. A pause, a little mindfulness, write down what you just did, and then consider what you want to do next.

I promise you, this will bring a lot more intention, mindfulness and focus to your day. You might even get some important stuff done.

The trick is to remember. How will you remember to do this ritual after every task?

And how powerful would it be for you to make this shift?

What Is Self Care And Why Is It Important?

The idea of self-care isn’t new. But thanks to the growing popularity of social media and video content consumption, it feels like our collective understanding of what self-care is and isn’t has become more and more warped – with people minimizing self-care to doing activities that often require you to spend a lot of money. 

But is there more to self-care than just taking a bubble bath and celebrating wins in life?

And why is it important? 

In this blog we’re going to dive into what self-care is, why it matters, and we’ll even briefly discuss different forms of self-care so you can start to better understand how multi dimensional self-care can be.

WHAT IS SELF CARE?

Let’s be real, taking a bubble bath, seeing your bath bomb fizz, it all feels nice. But we don’t all have bathtubs and an unlimited amount of water. And besides, there are other alternatives to practicing self-care that are more cost effective.

Self-care as defined by the World Health Organization is “the ability of individuals, families, and communities to promote their own health, prevent disease, maintain health, and to cope with illness and disability with or without the support of a health worker.”

In other words, self-care involves the active practice of identifying and taking care of your needs in order to promote and preserve your personal health and wellbeing. 

It can be something you do by yourself, or with the support of a professional, family, friends, and others.

Self care can also include things scheduling an appointment with your health care provider to discuss your health; saying no to people pleasing; and scheduling time to talk to a financial advisor, or spend some alone time.

WHAT ARE DIFFERENT TYPES OF SELF CARE?

Just as there are many dimensions of wellness, there are also many different forms of self-care that you can engage in. I’ve mentioned some self care activities above, but here are more general categories or “different pillars” of self care and examples.

  1. Emotional – ex. Processing your emotions with or without professional support 
  2. Practical – ex. Cleaning up your work space
  3. Physical – ex. Eating healthy meals regularly  
  4. Mental – ex. Engaging in activities that encourage you to think critically
  5. Social – ex. Finding time to talk 1:1 with close ones 
  6. Financial – ex. Setting personal financial goals 
  7. Spiritual – ex. Engaging in meditation or prayer 
  8. Professional – ex. Doing a course that’s related to your professional interests 
  9. Intellectual – ex. Challenging yourself to read more

HOW DO I KNOW IF I NEED TO ENGAGE IN SELF CARE?

Ever heard the saying “you can’t pour from an empty cup”?

That’s because in order to work well with others around you, or do anything in life and succeed at it, you need to take care of your needs – mental, emotional, social, financial, etc.

Everyone should engage in self care regularly. And you don’t have to wait until you feel overwhelmed or stressed to get started.

Rather, incorporating regular self care should be something we all do before we’re stressed as it can help prevent and mitigate things like burnout, overwhelm and stress.

If you’re having trouble identifying what kind of self care practices you should incorporate into your daily life, you can ask yourself these question:

  • What do I enjoy? 
  • What soothes or replenishes me? (what doesn’t?)
  • What is important for my health and wellbeing? 
  • Can I do this alone or do I need a little more support ? 
  • What do I need in this moment?
  • What’s one small thing that I can do today that’s going to make my life a little more stress free or enjoyable in the future? 

WHY IS SELF CARE IMPORTANT? 

While sweeping a little bit of stress under the rug from time to time can be okay in the short term, neglecting your needs can have numerous negative repercussions on your health and overall quality of life. 

Studies show that engaging in self-care practices can boost physical health, emotional health, and stress management. 

In a study conducted in 2018, researchers found that medical students who engaged in self-care activities experienced less stress, better mental and better quality of life compared to those who didn’t. 

All of which to say, practicing self care can help you live a longer, better life in the long run.

Stillness & Curiosity

Much of our lives are lived on autopilot.

We jump from one task to another, one message to another, one meeting to another, one browser tab to another. We react in habitual ways to other people, to situations. And we justify this as the way it should be.

Nothing wrong with that — but what would it be like to explore other possibilities?

What would it be like to pause and find stillness in a moment when we would normally be on autopilot?

Here’s what I’ve been exploring …

Every obstacle that we normally think of as a problem to be fixed … every “flaw” in ourselves or others that we judge as something to be fixed … what if we can pause, find stillness, and get curious instead of trying to fix?

For example:

  • Someone is acting in a way that feels rude or wrong — perhaps my autopilot response is to judge them, complain about them internally or externally, and either try to fix the problem or avoid the person. But I’ve been exploring getting still, and bringing curiosity to my reaction — what does it feel like, why do I get triggered in this way? Then curiosity to the other person — how might what they’re doing make sense to them?
  • If I’ve been procrastinating on something — my autopilot response might be to judge myself and feel inadequate, or maybe to avoid even thinking about it. What if I get still, and bring curiosity to how it feels to procrastinate on this, and what fear might be leading to the procrastination? Could I bring curiosity to why this task is even important to me?
  • If I am complaining about something or feeling burdened by something — my autopilot response is to just get through it, feeling put upon and a bit powerless. Could I get still and bring curiosity to my feeling of complaint, burden, powerlessness? Could there be anything to explore in what I really want in this situation, and why I’m avoiding speaking up for that?

In this way, every difficulty becomes a place to explore with curiosity, and there is growth and learning and delight to be found in everything.

This process, for me, starts with stillness. And then deepens with curiosity.

A Self-Sufficient Mind

In a quiet room, we can find stillness. And in that stillness, we can contemplate our own mind.

What we often find is that the mind is very restless. It wants to take care of a thousand things, because it’s feeling some uncertainty and fear. It wants to fix problems, take care of all the undone things, figure out if everything is going to be OK. It wants to get all of our needs met, from survival needs to meaning, connection and love.

The mind is restless, wanting to fix everything, get everything it needs.

What if we could allow our minds to rest, settling into the full sufficiency of itself just as it is?

We would need nothing in each moment, other than what’s required for physical survival. That doesn’t mean we do nothing (though we could!) — beyond our needs, there might be a wholehearted desire to do some good for ourselves or others, but it doesn’t have to come from fear.

There’s a settledness, a peace, that can come with this kind of practice.

There’s a feeling that we are enough. That everything we need is already contained in us.

It’s a lifetime practice.

Here’s how I recommend starting:

  1. Sit in a quiet spot. Elevate your hips above your knees with a cushion, to give yourself more stability and comfort. Sit in an upright but relaxed posture. Eyes can be closed or slightly open with a soft downward gaze.
  2. Find stillness. Stay in this spot for at least 5-10 minutes, longer over time if you like. It doesn’t have to be long, but when you feel restless, stay for a little longer to practice with this restlessness.
  3. Rest in direct experience. Let your attention turn to the sensations of your body, the sensations of the present moment. These sensations are direct experience of the world. Rest your mind in this open awareness of direct experience, without needing to do anything but witness them.
  4. Observe the mind. Your mind will want to turn away from this direct experience. That’s because it feels unsettled. It wants to get its needs met, or fix problems or deal with uncertainties or fear. That’s OK! Watch the mind do its thing. What is it trying to fix? Notice the underlying fear or desire as the mind tries to do its thing.
  5. Appreciate the luminous quality of the mind. The mind is like an energy, trying to do its best to survive. It is unaware that it already is brilliant, abundant, enough. It is luminous and beautiful. We can start to appreciate these delightful qualities of the mind. This takes curiosity, appreciation, and lots of practice. Keep practicing.

Relaxing with Chaos

There’s a big part of us that doesn’t like chaos: we want order and simplicity and feeling like we’re on top of things and doing things the “right” way.

And so when things feel chaotic, we scramble for some kind of stability:

  • When we feel overwhelmed and behwend, we might beat ourselves up and try to look for a system to get things under control.
  • When someone is upset with us, we might not like the feeling of being judged and the uncertainty about how people see us, and so we might lash out at them or spin around a story for days about how terrible that person is.
  • When plans don’t go how we hoped they would, we feel like we’re on unsteady ground, and we start criticizing ourselves or feeling like we’re doing things wrong and things are out of control, and it might bring a lot of stress in our lives.
  • When we think about putting our work out there into the world (by writing a book or putting out an album, for example) … we worry about the shakiness of putting ourselves out to be judged, and might decide that we won’t be OK if that happens, because it just feels too scary, and so we put off putting my work out there, for years.

Do you relate to any of these examples? In fact, the uncertainty of our chaotic lives is perhaps the main cause of our anxiety, stress, frustration, self-doubt, fears, procrastination, distraction and more.

We know when we’re feeling this chaos when we’re reaching for a new tool, system, method, tactic, plan, expert, book on a topic … or our phones.

There is nothing wrong with any of these things. It’s just how we normally respond to chaos.

But if we could relax in the middle of that chaos, it could do so much for us:

  • We would be OK with the feeling of overwhelm, and not need to panic or feel bad.
  • We would simply take the next step.
  • We could focus on one thing at a time.
  • We could put our work out in to the world, letting ourselves be with the shakiness of being judged.
  • We could be with someone’s upsetness, giving them compassion rather than worrying about whether we’ll be OK.
  • We could simply meditate, go for a walk, exercise, eat healthy food, deal with our finances, and do all kinds of other simple, helpful actions that we put off when we feel stressed about chaos.
  • And much, much more.

The training is to learn to relax with chaos. And from that place, decide on the next simple step.

Training with the Chaos

The training is to notice when we’re feeling chaos … and then use it as a kind of meditation, to breathe and then relax.

Notice when you’re feeling chaos. You don’t have to look for it — you’re probably feeling it right now. The world will always give us enough chaos to practice with. It’s a gift.

Notice it, and then pause.

Breathe. Deep into your belly, slowly, letting yourself relax with each breath.

Then learn to relax with this feeling of chaos, uncertainty, fear, anxiety, shakiness, groundlessness.

Breathe, and with each breath, relax into the feeling of uncertainty and chaos.

Repeat.

How To Live In The Moment And Be Mindful Of The Present

Centuries ago there was a Roman stoic philosopher named Seneca. He lived around 2,000 years ago, and he is one of the most well-known ancient Stoic philosophers. 

Here’s a quote from discussing staying in the present moment. “Wild animals run from the dangers they actually see, and once they have escaped them worry no more. We however are tourmed alike by what is past and what is to come” 

Staying in the present and mindfulness is what I have been thinking about a lot lately, and this is what we will discuss in today’s article.

What Is Mindfulness In The Present Moment?

Over the past couple of years, I’ve been observing myself and how others behave at social events or when we are collectively taking part in activities and what I’ve found is quite interesting.

To go into a bit of detail I’ve been privileged to have wonderful experiences with friends and family in my life and what I’ve found is the people around me and myself included have varying degrees of mindfulness and enjoying the present moment. What I’ve been guilty of and what I’ve seen from others particularly in this story I am about to tell you is projecting the good time you are having on Social Media rather than enjoying the moment itself. 

What Does Mindfulness Look Like?

I often find myself at dinners with friends, whether it be for a birthday or a leaving party and I see quite few people are on their phone for the entire time. I rarely think much of it except that it’s interesting how often people would rather scroll on Instagram and look at other people’s lives rather than enjoying the good time they could and should be having. Of course, nothing I am saying is crazy, it’s all normal behaviour.

I work in the Digital space so I understand the draw and appeal of Social Media (no hate here). We typically take a few photos at events to remember it by, which is completely fine. Take photos to enjoy and savour the moment, and everyone is smiling in the photos and showing they are having a good time. However, after all the photo-taking, what I’ve noticed is people go right back to scrolling on their phones, hardly interacting unless spoken to and not indulging in the beauty of their surroundings. I often see people go from smiling, posing in photos like they are having the time of their lives, to sitting back on their phones looking miserable. 

Why Should I be More Mindful Of The Present?

Being at specific events or taking part in specific activities typically only happens for a limited period. The whole reason people go to events and do activities is to fully experience them and take them in for what they are. To be present at these unique places. That’s why we chase those things. Try not to chase the validation you get from showing other people you have these experiences because if you do this, you’ve missed the point entirely.

Be present and take in the few moments we have here on Earth. You can be on your phone at any place; put the phone down and take in the present moment. I implore you to do this; you won’t miss out on anything. Don’t let the present moment slip away for chasing a future reward in likes and validation. It is wise to live a life that is authentic to who you are and how you feel.

I can almost assure you will be filled with regret when you become old that you never enjoyed the present moment. However, what you have is the moment right here, right now in front of you. Don’t waste it and don’t take it for granted. Because as Seneca says: “true happiness is to enjoy the present without anxious dependence upon the future.” So in this case, enjoy the present without anxious thoughts on “I need to get a good post for Instagram” or “how many likes I am going to get” because I can promise you will be infinitely more grateful if you just take the moments in and capture them for yourself and not the validation of others.

To Be Aware Of Ourselves, Of Who You Are

Labelling yourselves only puts you “In The Box.” Instead of I am who I am defined by this and that, let yourself explore who you truly are. Be without thinking because all things change, there is no permanence in life. As change is the only constant. 

“New names unknown, old names gone,” from the book When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi reminded me of our finite existence. How vulnerable life is as a living breathing mortal. So I decide to live my life while I’m still at it with my truest self. Listen. Getting in touch with your “Self” is the best gift you can give yourself. It gave me a new depth of gratitude and contentment, it will to you too. Not that I’ve lived long enough to experience the bitter and sweet the world has got to offer. Fun fact, I’m 18. I wrote this genuinely because I want to share with you the whole new perspective you can untapped by a mindful reflection once every while. We are so busy living that we often become disconnected from our “Self.”   

Be Like Water

I have a friend miles away, sharing the same spark in mindfulness and growth. Eric is a teacher and a meditation practitioner. A delightful soul he is. He has a favourite quote “Be like water.” Water is fluid, that’s obvious! But not so quick! Here’s my favourite quote by Lao Tzu, an ancient philosopher. “Water is fluid, soft, and yielding. But water will wear away rock, which is rigid and cannot yield. As a rule, whatever is fluid, soft, and yielding will overcome whatever is rigid and hard. This is another paradox: what is soft is strong.”  Hence, lessen your control over many aspects of life and embrace the flow, be it a good one or a bad one. Stop resisting, and you will feel the weight of burdens washes away. Conforming is not giving up, do not mistake it with weakness. It is in fact, bravery. To be strong enough to face the harsh reality instead of attempting to change the unchangeable and resist. 

Categories & Labels

The concept of favouring control associates itself with categorizing and labelling. This act comes so naturally to us because “Order” grants a sense of comfort, and security. But as much as I wish for what I expect of my future, life can never be certain. To many, this “Unknown” is dreadful. Take the most simple example, many define themselves as either an introvert or extrovert. It gives an identity that allows us to be bubbled in a comfort zone. Unconsciously avoiding what feels unnatural, not letting one tad bit of ourselves land in an unknown and possibly unwanted scenarios that associate with it. 

Moreover, it does feel nice to gather in a community of like-minded people. There’s a sense of belonging. 

“We’re in the same boat!” 

“I feel you.” 

“I’m not alone.”

Everyone wants to belong somewhere, no one including the most independent solitude person wants to be left out. After all, we are social animals. It is important to understand yourselves, but it does not mean you should conform to a confining idea of who you deem you are. Only by knowing yourselves, you can grow. But again, like I said there’s a limit to our designed society. These categories aren’t perfect and will never be. 

The Value of Intuition

Have you ever known that something was going to happen before it actually did?  Have you ever known what someone was going to say before he or she said it? Have you ever thought about a person and then received a phone call from that person immediately right after?

Those are mystical signs that your intuition is at work.

What is intuition? Intuition or Gut Feeling is receiving inspirational insight from a higher power to help guide your current situation. It’s a Knowingness about something in your life.

Everyone has intuition. But everyone has different levels of intuition where some are more powerful than others.

Magic & Silence

Intuition is like magic.  It can lead you to magical places beyond your wildest dreams.  Intuition is a gift from the universe, which can steer you in the right path.  Intuition can be your superpower.

How can you develop your intuition? From personal experience, perhaps the best way to do so is meditation. Meditation promotes “silence” to relax your mind, body and spirit.

Monks are experts in meditation since they practice it everyday. When your mind is in silent mode, it’s much easier to see, hear and feel what your intuition is trying to tell you. Many of us can’t tune into our intuition because we don’t take the time for silence. We focus too much on external noise and not our “inner” silence.

Meditation is powerful. The more you practice meditation, the better it is for the development of intuition. This way, your gut feeling will help you in any aspect of your life and protect you from harm as well. For this article, I will not reveal on how to practice meditation. There’s another article in this blog on how to practice meditation.

Intuition is natural and organic that’s within us, and we need it.  Allow me to repeat: We need intuition to better ourselves!

I Knew It!

I came across a YouTube video: What Is Intuition? The narrator mentioned that we do not listen to our intuition. She also mentioned that she had many conversations with people that said:

I knew I shouldn’t of gotten involved with that person!”

I knew I shouldn’t of done that!” 

I knew I shouldn’t of entered into that business agreement!”

I knew I shouldn’t of gone on that trip!”

I knew I shouldn’t of trusted that person!”

I knew! I knew! I knew!

Sounds familiar?  Although their intuition told them not to, they did it anyway!  I believe we’ve all been guilty of not listening to our intuition.

For many years I’ve been fortunate to have quiet and peaceful neighbors.  My next door neighbor sold his home and a new owner — Frank — moved in.  We met the day he moved in, and we talked for a few minutes to get acquainted with each other.  I like him.

I told Frank that I’m “chill” and our other neighbors — David and Sarah — are chill as well. 

Frank said: “I’m chill as well.”

Immediately after he said that, my powerful intuition said to me: “Not even close!”  Apparently our definition of “chill” differs greatly.  As the weeks and months went by, Frank is quite loud with his music and gets emotionally loud during his phone conversations.  Again I like him, and we talk often.

As for me, I’m quiet as a monk.  My point: From the moment I met Frank, I knew that he’s not so chill based on my gut feeling.

Thank God I Listened!

Many years ago, I had a very intense experience one quiet evening at home as I browsed the internet. The lights inside my house were on, and I received some loud banging on my door. Quite perplexed, I approached the door and looked into the peep hole.  

I saw a distraught man.  Willing to help him, I almost opened the door. 

Like a ton of bricks, my intuition momentarily froze my body and said to me: “Do NOT open the door!”

Instead I slightly opened my window and asked him: “Can I help you?”

With a desperate look on his face, he replied: “Please let me in!  The cops are after me!”

Then I said: “I’m calling the cops right now!” 

He immediately ran away, and I never saw him again.  Though I never called the cops.

Who knows how things may have turned out if I opened the door.  Thank God I listened to my intuition because it may have saved my life! 

One morning at work, I met with the secretary, Julie.  I took notice of a beautiful quilt that hung up on the wall.  I mentioned to Julie: “That’s a beautiful quilt.”  

Julie responded with a smile on her face: “Thank you.  I made it myself. Making quilts is my hobby.”

As I looked at Julie with amazement, my intuition told me to ask her: “Did your grandmother raise you?”

She continued to have a smile on her face and answered: “Yes.”

Then I said to her: “Julie, I did not ask for it.  It just hit me like a ton of bricks that my intuition told me to ask you.”

Julie said to me: “Wow.  I’m impressed.”

I realized the question that I asked Julie was personal but not too invasive.  I asked her because I had to know.  Julie and I did not know each other’s personal background prior to that encounter.

A Radio That Would Not Turn Off!

Lastly, I would like to share with you a correlation between intuition and home buying.  Allow me to set it up for you.  My friend — Marvin — is a real estate agent. Back in 1995, I only had a vague notion about becoming a first-time homeowner.  My intuition told me to call Marvin because he had a property that I might be interested in buying.  I had a property description in mind as well. 

I actually ignored my intuition.  Much to my dismay, my intuition kept telling me to call Marvin, and I continued to ignore it.

For two days, I continued to ignore my intuition, and it kept nagging at me to the point of annoyance.  My mind was like a radio that would not turn off!  Desperately wanting to turn it off, I called Marvin.  I described to Marvin the property that I was interested in.  Much to my amazement, Marvin had three properties that fit the description.

So we met up the next day, and Marvin showed me three properties.

Property #1: It was nice, but I wasn’t interested.

Property #2: It was nice as well but not interested.

Property #3: As soon as I stepped inside the property, a tremendous surge of energy flowed through my body! 

I turned to Marvin and said: “This is the spot, Marvin!”

Marvin laughed his ass off!

To make a long story short, I purchased the property via mortgage loan.  I now own it FREE and CLEAR!  Remember that I ignored my intuition from the start, but the noise would not turn off until I took action.

According to Marsha Sinetar, author of Do What You Love, The Money Will Follow: “They know what they want because they hear themselves, are able to pay attention to the silent, indwelling push to pursue one career or life-path over another. In this way they acknowledge their unique life’s purpose.”

Everyday your intuition is trying to tell you something that’s in your best interest.  So that begs the question: Are you listening to your intuition?

The Value Of Spiritual Enlightenment

Spiritual Enlightenment is a long and difficult journey.  I have the utmost respect for the graceful individuals who are courageous enough to pursue a higher calling.  I’ve been on that long, winding and difficult journey of spiritual enlightenment for 30 years. 

But why go through the trouble?  Perhaps to seek higher truth or purpose.  Perhaps to uncover the unknown or uncertainty.  Perhaps all of the aforementioned.  Spiritual growth may be interpreted differently from person to person.

You’ll notice here that Spiritual Enlightenment and Spiritual Growth are used interchangeably.  They are one and the same.

It takes tremendous courage and patience to start and continue such a journey because it’s often done alone.  Spiritual Growth is not a destination, it’s not an endpoint, it’s not static, but  a continuous journey that may take a lifetime to explore and develop through uncharted waters.

How does someone pursue even a small amount of spiritual growth, wholeness and peace?  I’ve been practicing meditation for 30 years.  That’s not to say that you have to do the same, but you should find your own path to enlightenment.  Some love to meditate…as I do.  Some love to read spiritual books…as I do.  Some find their bliss in the presence of nature…as I do.  Some listen to relaxing music…as I do.  Some attend therapy…I don’t, but God knows I should.  No pun intended!  

With such an enormous task at hand, don’t be surprised that you may develop into a mystical being and live a “quieter” and “simpler” life than before.  As you seek spiritual growth, you’ll have greater awareness and compassion.  Please be aware that this journey involves an “inner calling” that may be unknown to you initially.

People become spiritually evolved, whole and peaceful when they come to a realization regarding the difficulties in their lives.

In his Mega Best Seller, The Road Less Traveled, M. Scott Peck has a Famous opening line: “Life is difficult.”

Recognizing your difficulties is perhaps the first step in the journey of spiritual growth.

If you’ve ever experienced meditation, then you have the ability “within” yourself to see, hear and feel certain emotions.  When Buddha meditated for weeks under a tree, he found liberation and enlightenment.  He became “The Awakened One.”

According to a YouTube video: The Enlightenment Of The Buddha, the narrator said: “Life can never satisfy us because we always want more.  The only way to achieve peace is to stop wanting.”

Monks & Spirituality

My friend, Cindy, posted a message on social media: “It may not seem like it, but even monks from what I understand, never stop moving forward.  Eventually the end purpose is to pray and feel a connection to Higher Beings.  Whether it is to seek comfort or simply to appreciate and be grateful.”

Those are beautiful words from a beautiful person; Cindy has the ability to put smiles on people’s faces, including monks.

Monks believe they have a calling to express themselves in a silent, still, humble, holy and peaceful manner.  In fact, monks take a vow of silence.  It’s their “inner guide” that propels them to this vocation of spiritual growth.  In order to pursue such a vocation, one must slowly detach from the external world and accept silence from deep within.

Silence also helps to relax the mind, body and spirit, which is why monks practice meditation daily. If you wish to develop silence, then meditation is a wonderful practice.

When an individual acknowledges to move forward in such a challenging journey, commitment and discipline must be in order because such a journey may take years to explore.

Even ordinary people can develop a monastic mindset.  It’s rare, but there are everyday people who are most happy with very minimal possessions.

The Road Less Traveled

You may have read a great poem by Robert Frost, which resonates with spiritual enlightenment.

The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost:

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,

And sorry I could not travel both

And be on traveler, long I stood

And looked down one as far as I could

To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,

And having perhaps the better claim,

Because it was grassy and wanted wear;

Though as for that the passing there

Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay

In leaves no step had trodden black.

Oh, I kept the first for another day!

Yet knowing how way leads on to way,

I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh

Somewhere ages and ages hence:

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I

I took the one less traveled by, 

And that has made all the difference.

A Fork In The Road

As a seeker of spiritual enlightenment, you’re at a crossroad with two choices: Road A or Road B.  You’re unsure of which road to pursue; however, you must select only one road.

Road A is a familiar path with no change in sight, so the same results are expected.  It’s a well known fact that if you continue to do the same things over and over again, you’ll produce the same outcome.

Road B is an unfamiliar path, and it’s quite frightening to be honest.  This road has uncertainties and unknown factors.  Road B involves taking risks, and it might not work out.  At the same time, there’s also a “possibility” that it will work out.  I’m currently on Road B, and I’m UNSURE if this journey will work out.  But I’m here.

So that begs the question: Which road will you take?

Silence, Stillness & Intuition

Many people yearn for spiritual enlightenment but fall short because of the peculiar work that’s required.  What are the requirements you may ask?  Silence, stillness, deep thinking and working “alone” for years on end.  Please feel free to add more to the list as you see fit.

This “silence” is not available during a normal waking state, but only in deep meditative thought and contemplation.

I attended a Zoom meeting with a few friends one day.  My friend, Armari, said something that was profound to me.  Armari said: “My intuition told me to do this…” 

The significance was that Armari used the word “intuition” in his statement.  I also use the word: intuition.  That prompted me to ask Armari a question: “Armari — if you don’t mind me asking — do you practice meditation?”

Armari’s response: “Yes.”

A truly serendipitous moment indeed since I practice meditation!  Not only did my intuition tell me that Armari meditates, but he’s definitely on The Road Less Traveled exploring spiritual enlightenment as well.

A few days later,  I sent Armari a text that contained some spiritual growth content.  He was thankful and grateful for such a gift.  It’s a gift that I do not share with just anyone because most people do not fit the bill regarding spiritual growth, and they will not understand it anyway.  I must receive some “spiritual signs” from an individual in order to give it away.  Armari definitely has a high level of spirituality, which is the reason why I shared it with him.

Armari replied: “Thank you…thank you!  It’s great to connect with like-minded individuals.  It’s not easy to find people who like to talk about spirituality.  Luckily, I’m blessed to have a small circle around me who have varying degrees of spirituality, and we can openly discuss.  I look forward to having some discussions on spirituality in the future.”

Armari’s reply was a breath of spiritual fresh air.

A Solitary Journey

Cindy is a peaceful, highly intelligent and creative soul with immense love for humanity. Although she may not realize it yet, Cindy is a wonderful role model to others. She’s certainly exploring her journey of spiritual evolution for years to come.

I asked Cindy a poignant question: “Do you share spiritual growth content with your immediate family members, friends, relatives and acquaintances?” 

Cindy’s response: “Nope.”

Try this on for size!  I discuss spiritual growth with only two individuals that I’ve never met in person: Cindy and Armari.  It gets better.  The three of us live in different countries!

Remember what Armari said?  “It’s not easy to find people who like to talk about spirituality.”  Truth be told!

According to M. Scott Peck in The Road Less Traveled: “Those who have grown the most spiritually are those who are the experts of living.  But the person who has evolved to the highest level of awareness, of spiritual power, will likely have NO one in his or her circle of acquaintances with whom to share such depth of understanding.  This kind of ALONENESS is “shared” by all who travel the farthest on the journey of spiritual growth.  The ultimate goal of life remains the spiritual growth of the individual, the SOLITARY journey to peaks that can be climbed ALONE.”

According to Marsha Sinetar, author of Ordinary People As Monks And Mystics: “The work, if it is to be done at all, must be done ALONE.”

With that said, I consider myself very blessed to have Cindy and Armari as spiritual friends; it’s important and healthy to share such beautiful gifts with each other. Even at afar.

“Meditation is deep relaxation and hypnosis is deep relaxation with added suggestion,” says Orlando, Florida-based hypnotist, Richard Barker.

If you’re confused between the differences and similarities between meditation and hypnosis, then let’s explore in depth their importance and clear up any misconceptions.  Millions of people from all over the world practice meditation and hypnosis.  But you may ask, “Which one is better for me?” or “Which one should I do?”

The answer to those questions depends on your intentions.

To keep it simple, let’s assume that both modalities require individuals to comfortably sit still with their eyes closed.   Now looking from the outside, meditation and hypnosis look the same; however, the inner workings of the mind is most certainly different between the two.

Let’s Start With The Similarities

A wonderful feeling of deep relaxation is EXACTLY the same for both modalities.   A deep relaxing feeling in meditation is EXACTLY the same as a deep relaxing feeling in hypnosis.

Accessing the subconscious mind is also a common occurrence for meditation and hypnosis.  At such a deep state of relaxation, our emotions, impulses, and ideas may arise from the subconscious mind. 

As you can see, the similarities are short and to the point.  Not very exciting.

Now Let’s Discuss The Differences — This Is Where It Gets Really Interesting!

When people talk or write about meditation, some words may conjure up as ways to define or describe it:

  • Mindfulness

With that list, you may define meditation any way you want. Please add more to the list as you see fit.  According to Hypnosis Training Academy, Mindfulness is the most researched of all the mental practices.

The great Phil Jackson taught meditation to his basketball players that won 11 NBA Championships (NBA record for a Head Coach).

Meditation allows you to enhance focus and mindfulness through peace and stillness.  As mentioned above, it’s very relaxing and may have potential health benefits.  Meditation can enhance intuition and connect you to a higher power as well.  Meditation is awesome!

Here’s a curve ball question: Can someone actually visualize a goal during meditation?  Absolutely!  Great athletes do it all the time.  The great Olympic swimmer — Michael Phelps — used Visualization Meditation to help him win multiple gold medals.

I have been practicing meditation for 30 years. If you have doubts about meditation, then try meditating on it!

Hypnosis

Hypnosis — on the other hand — is way more technical and usually requires the help of a therapist (Probably way more technical for the purpose of this article).  Hypnosis is meditation with a goal for positive change or improvement by accessing the subconscious mind; moreover, the changes in limiting beliefs that affect thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

Some goals may be to stop smoking, overcome fear of public speaking, improve sports performance, improve grades or lose weight.  The goal can be “anything” when you’re accessing the subconscious mind!

Hypnosis is also a natural and relaxed state of mind, and we actually go in and out of hypnosis everyday. When we’re engaged in a movie, book or even day dreaming, then we’re experiencing a natural hypnotic trance.

A therapist will guide a client into deep relaxation and employ the power of positive suggestions to bring about subconscious change in thoughts, feelings and behaviors.

How Hypnosis Suggestions Work

The media has portrayed hypnosis with some myths and misconceptions as mind control, dangerous, lose consciousness, manipulative, unnatural, etc. All these things have something in common and that is just to provoke false statements regarding hypnosis.

Also keep in mind that ALL hypnosis is SELF-hypnosis.  A therapist can’t make you do anything you don’t want during hypnosis.  You’re in full control during the entire process — NOT the therapist!  The therapist is only a helping guide.  If an emergency occurs during hypnosis, then you’ll easily open your eyes and handle the situation.

I was fortunate enough to experience hypnosis with a therapist and loved it. Hypnosis is awesome! 

So that begs the question: Which method is better?  Only “you” know the answer.

Take a moment. Breathe. Focus your mind. Slow down and read each word. Become aware of yourself reading this sentence, this paragraph. You, sitting there, focusing on each word, one by one. Become aware of each sound as it echoes in your mind, the one you’re hearing right now, and this one, and again and again and again. The voice in your mind reading this to you, is that you? If so, then who is doing the listening?

Ideally, the above paragraph forced you into some form of meditation. It forced you to become aware of your thoughts and mental processes, and then hopefully helped you differentiate your Self from the thoughts and sounds running through your head.

Meditation forces one to dis-identify with their mind and emotions. It is perhaps the easiest to learn and most available personal developmental tool on the planet. The disabled can do it. Children can do it. Stephen Hawking can do it. Anyone with conscious awareness can practice it. You can do it on a crowded bus. You can do it in a monastery. You can do it in your bedroom. You can do it now as you read this. Experienced meditators can even do it while they sleep. Its health benefits — mental, emotional, and physical — are innumerable and there are no side effects. You can learn to do it in as little as five minutes and once you learn you’ll never forget. Doing it as little 10 minutes a day can make you happier and healthier, and doing it as little as 30 minutes per day could change your life.

Yet almost no one does it regularly. Myself included. Why?

It’s hard to do. Really fucking hard. No seriously, take a few seconds and close your eyes and try to think about nothing for 30 seconds. No seriously, try it. Just for 30 seconds. I guarantee you can’t do it.

If you try, you’ll soon notice that our minds are producing a constant stream of thought-vomit, and most of us identify so strongly with it that we don’t even notice. Our mental energy is sapped by an endless stream of useless, unhelpful thoughts and opinions:

“I hope the Lakers win tonight. I wonder if Shannon will ever call me back. I really enjoyed our date together, but maybe I should have picked a better restaurant? Oh, that’s silly worrying about that. I wonder if that new Sushi place near Dave’s is any good? I should call him, I haven’t talked to him in a while. He can be overly-negative though sometimes. Oh, I should buy a movie to watch this weekend, that will be cool. I wonder what though. I remember when I watched that one movie with Sara, my teenage girlfriend. God, we were young and naive. First kisses are awkward. But yeah, I should call Dave, I haven’t called him in a while. I should call Dad too, he gets testy if I don’t call him. Oh, today’s Tuesday, Breaking Bad is on.”

Chances are your mind sounds like this on a daily basis, and you’re rarely aware of it. Few of us are. Meditation trains our minds to prune and hone our thoughts, to only focus on what’s useful and important, to disregard the rest, and to separate our egos and identities from the thoughts and emotions running through our heads. This may sound like little, but it adds up and the life benefits are massive.

I got into meditation as a teenager and became serious about it in college. Since graduating, I’ve lost touch with the practice (got distracted with girls, booze, and work), but it’s a goal of mine this year to reboot my meditation habit. Its benefits in my life were wonderful and I miss the clarity and consciousness I had when I practiced regularly.

If your mind is a muscle, then meditation is a way to take it to the gym. The stronger your control of your mind becomes, the more you’re able to consciously control what your mind focuses on and how it processes new information. Strengthening your mind in this way has repercussions on every aspect of your life: your emotional health and self-esteem, your work performance, your discipline, your relationships, your overall happiness, your stress levels, and your physical health as well. I attribute a lot of the success I’ve attained in other areas of my life to all of the meditation I did when I was younger. In everything I’ve pursued since that time, I’ve noticed that my mind is more focused than most and that I’ve always been able to strip away the unnecessary distractions and get right at what’s important in any endeavor.

How to Meditate

There are dozens of styles and techniques to meditation. The beautiful thing is that none of them are right or wrong, simply different. Whatever forces you to focus your mind on your awareness and let go of any thoughts or emotions that arise is a form of meditation. Whether it involves mantras, counting breaths, yoga, chanting, rituals or whatever.

But to begin, I recommend people start with a basic sitting and counting of breaths. The process is easy.

Set aside 10 or 15 minutes. Get a clock or timer and set an alarm preferably, because you are going to be tempted to get up or stop before the time is up. Go into a quiet room where there are no distractions. Toss a pillow on the floor and sit on it cross-legged. Don’t worry if you can’t cross your legs perfectly, just do it as much as possible while remaining comfortable. Plant your ass firmly on the pillow and then make sure your back is straight. Relax your diaphragm and let your belly hang out (don’t worry, no one’s looking). Look straight ahead. You can close your eyes or leave them open, it doesn’t really matter. I prefer leaving mine open, but to start out you can close them if it makes you feel more comfortable. You can put your hands on your knees or you can rest them in your lap, one on top of the other, palms facing up, as shown in the picture.

Now comes the hard part. Clear your mind. Think about nothing. Breathe through your nose into your chest until your chest is full. Your belly should expand out. Then slowly exhale. One. Do the same thing again. Each breath, count the breath. When a thought or distraction arises, start the count over again at one. Thoughts and distractions WILL come up, and if you’re just starting out, they will often come up without you even noticing them until they’ve been rattling around for a few seconds.

Don’t judge yourself. Don’t get mad. Don’t get frustrated and say, “I suck at this.” Just acknowledge the thought, let it go, and reset your counting. Chances are you won’t get past two or three the first few times you meditate. It often takes people months to even get to ten.

Do this for the full 15 minutes. It’s only 15 minutes, but I guarantee it will feel closer to three hours. By the fourth minute you’ll be dying to get up and do something. Your mind will be going crazy. Chances are you’ll start to let your mind go and just start thinking about the party last weekend, or the project that you’re working on at work. That’s fine. Don’t judge. Just let go and start the count over again.

This is the most basic form of Zen meditation, which is the practice I followed for a few years. If you get through one session, congratulations. I imagine you will get up feeling much more relaxed, clear-headed, and will feel calmer throughout your day.

These sessions are easier to do and to keep up with if done with someone else, so you can keep each other accountable. Daily practices are best. Start with 10 or 15 minutes each morning when you wake up and slowly add time from there. Once you get to the point where you can keep your mind thoughtless for a full 10 breaths or so, there are other techniques or practices you can begin to add.

Benefits of Meditation

I’ve alluded to a lot of benefits of meditation throughout the article. Of all so-called “spiritual practices,” meditation probably has the largest body of scientific research backing up its utility and power. Numerous studies using MRI and EEG have shown that a regular meditation practice can rewire the neural patterns in the brain and even increase grey matter. Below are some practical benefits psychologists and doctors have found to regular meditation:

  • Increases Self-Awareness. Psychologists have noted that patients who practice meditation develop greater awareness of their actions and emotions. Some therapists prescribe meditation to their patients to assist them in their practice.
  • Increases Focus and Discipline. Practitioners of meditation are able to retain focus on specific tasks and are less likely to deviate from those tasks. Meditation increases one’s ability in what psychologists call “self-regulation.”
  • Reduces Stress and Anxiety. Mindfulness techniques have been shown to reduce anxiety and stress and have long been prescribed to patients who suffer anxiety disorders and panic attacks as a way to calm their nerves with relatively good success rates.
  • Makes you Physically Healthier. People who meditate on average sleep better, have lower heart rates, have lower blood pressure, and get sick less often.
  • Increases Emotional Stability. F or people who are prone to outbursts of anger or sadness, meditation helps people regulate and control their emotions.
  • Increases Memory and Helps You Think More Clearly. Meditating trains you to remove all of the unnecessary garbage from your thought-patterns. This then frees up your mind to retain what is useful and important more efficiently.
  • Gets You In Touch With Your Intuition. Often referred to as your “gut reaction,” your “instinct,” or your “intuition,” meditating gets you in touch with your unconscious decision-making processes. Daniel Kahneman refers to it as your “first brain.” Malcolm Gladwell refers to it as “blink.” Whatever it is, that instant, gut reaction that you have about some things, is often right. Meditation will increase that. This goes hand-in-hand with self-awareness.
  • Increases Your Ability to Empathize with Others. Brain scans show that meditation activates the positive, happy, empathetic aspects of the brain. People who practice meditation regularly report an ability to empathize and care about the emotions of others and bond with them more easily.
  • Lowers a Need for External Validation. Meditating trains yourself to become more aware of what thoughts and emotions dictate your behavior, primarily where you’re trying to receive your love and validation that may not be working. It forces you to become more aware of your needy and neurotic behaviors and put an end to them.

Meditation is by no means a cure-all for your problems. But I believe that it’s a powerful tool. Meditation’s purpose is to give you perspective and clarity on your internal issues. It doesn’t fix them for you. Years ago, one of the most upsetting parts of my involvement in Zen was how many long-time practitioners I met who convinced themselves that meditation fixed all of their psychological and emotional problems, when it didn’t. It helped them experience and become aware of those problems, but you still have to go out into the world and commit the actions to overcome them. Sitting in a room staring at a wall all day is unlikely to do that.

Meditation and Spirituality

There is a spiritual aspect to a meditative practice, for those of you into that kind of thing. I usually avoid spirituality on this blog on purpose. I believe spirituality is something that’s experienced and lived, not discussed or taught. In my opinion, spirituality, by its definition, cannot be discussed. Just the resulting experiences of a spirituality can be described. Spirituality itself is transrational. It’s like counting to infinity. Words can capture part of it but never fill it up.

One such way to experience that spirituality is through meditation. I’m no good at describing the experience with words. But if you’ve ever had a moment in your life where your sense of self — your sense of identity — completely dissolved and there was no longer differentiation between you, the sky, the water, the people around you, everything. If you ever stared at the stars so long you started laughing at how beautiful the fact that we even exist is. If you’ve ever suddenly realized that your fears and worries were illusions created by your ego and mind, and that good and bad were simply separate expressions of the same grand unity of This, and that you never had to be afraid, ever, because you — your fears, your flaws, your failings, everything about you — was just another perfect expression of the same reality. Then yeah, meditation can help you get that back.

Yoga

Yoga is practiced all over the world as it continues to grow in popularity. It’s actually an ancient practice developed more than 5,000 years ago in India. It began as philosophical teachings to live a wholesome life and to become closer to the Divine. Over the centuries, yoga has maintained its original intention, but it certainly has evolved over time.

Today, one can step into a yoga studio to practice a more physical aspect of yoga, called Asana. That is the nature of moving the body through a series of poses and sequences that bring more awareness to the body. It also contributes to a healthier state of being. For example, if one is experiencing a sore back, tight hips, or is recovering from a recent injury, the physical practice of yoga can help in the healing process. Although the popularity of yoga has grown around the physical nature of the practice, yoga is so much more. Asana is only one portion of the full richness of the yoga philosophy. Another important aspect of yoga is Meditation.

Meditation

Meditation is an intentional practice of enhancing one’s focus and awareness. Yoga in this form can help with a common human experience: stress. Anxiety and stress can be detrimental to the mind and body. It may lead to serious health deficits including heart disease, depression, high blood pressure, and more. Taking the time to sit in stillness to meditate is very important and necessary for the well being of the individual.

When one is able to come to this restful state, it can lower heart rate thereby reducing the risk of high blood pressure and other heart conditions. Further, a mindful meditation practice can ease the anxious mind. We are commonly flooded with worries, concerns, and distractions that only add tension to the entire bodily system. The mind needs much needed rest, just as the body needs rest from a strenuous workout, for example.

Pranayama

Another aspect of yoga is called Pranayama, which is a breathing practice. It focuses on various ways to breathe in order to enhance mental healing. With a mindful connection and awareness to the breath, one can put aside the stressful thoughts that can plague the mind. It brings the practitioner to the present rather than focusing on the past or worrying about an unknown future. The breath practice is directly related to meditation, too.

While in meditation, one uses the breath as a tool or anchor to stay present. It allows the yogi to observe those constant and overwhelming thoughts while adding no judgement to them. Eventually, the person is able to release those thoughts and replace them with more healthy intentions and a mindfulness that keeps them more in the present moment.

The practice of yoga is to help the practitioner feel more whole. That experience can be fulfilled with healing the body with physical movement and cleansing the mind with breath work and meditation. As it relates to the ancient origins of yoga, this wholesome practice allows for a clearer life pathway. This may lead to healthy living and even a guide toward Enlightenment and the Divine.

Equipment

What is wonderful about starting a yoga practice is that you do not need much equipment. All you really need is a yoga mat and some comfortable clothing. The yoga mat provides a well-suited platform for moving through yoga positions. You want to wear something that does not restrict the body while you are in motion. This also goes for sitting comfortably for your meditative practice. If you’d like, you can simply sit on your yoga mat. If you need more support, try sitting on a folded blanket or cushion so the focus can remain on the yoga practice rather than trying to sit still.

Now you are ready to practice yoga. Whatever your intention is, to seek relief in your stiff body or to reduce tension and stress, you can find that yoga is a resourceful way to meet your goals.
